History
Cambodia's coast
has been identified as popular with visitors since the 19th
century. Early travelers' accounts describe the coastal areas,
currently designated as Preah Sihanouk "Ream" National
Park, as being particularly beautiful. Establishing Preah
Sihanouk National Park - often referred as a protected area is
part of along tradition in Cambodia to protect and preserve
natural areas. The renowned temple of Angkor Wat, together with
surrounding forests, was conferred the status of a national park
in 1925 - the first national park in Southeast Asia.

On 1 November
1993, His Majesty King Norodom Sihanouk issued a Royal Decree
concerning the Creation and Designation of Protected Areas,
resurrecting Cambodia's commitment to developing a national
system of protected areas following decades of civil conflict.
Preah Sihanouk National Park was one of 23 protected areas
established by the decree. The Park was selected as a 'natural
and scenic area of significance for its scientific, educational
and recreational values'. The Park was inaugurated on 21 March
1995. Currently, the Park integrates practical training in
national Park management with community development,
environmental and active protection of Cambodia's coastal
resources.
