ILO
Approves Camfeba As Lobbying Agent
The
International
Labor Organization has recognized Cambodia's first employers
federation as a legitimate organization to lobby on national labor
policy. JeanFrancois Retournard, director of ILO's Bureau for
Employers' Activities, sent a recognition letter to Van Sou Ieng,
president of Cambodian Federation of Employers and Business
Associations, acknowledging that the federation meets ILO guidelines
to act as a key player lobbying the government on labor policy.
"We note that your objectives are in line with ILO tripartite
principles,
Retournard wrote, stating that Camfeba adequately
represents the country's principal business sectors and is ready to
build up its membership to "play an important role in the years
ahead in influencing policy at national level on behalf of
employers." Camfeba, which is comprised of six business
associations and several individual business owners representing
more than 600 employers, was officially formed last December in
response to employers' desire to address labor issues with a single
voice as workers grew more vocal, united and demanding of their
labor rights. "It is very important that a UN agency recognizes
Cambodia's employers' organization," Van Sou Ieng said, adding
that recognition makes the federation a member of the international
labor movement. (Yuko Maeda)
