Warned About Overfishing
Southeast Asian countries were warned Tuesday that
the accelerated pace of exploiting fishery resources over the last
decade has led to declining production that must be addressed
through conservation. Marking the official opening of the Southeast
Asian Fisheries Development Center's marine research department,
Singapore Minister for National Development Mah Bow Tan said it will
enable Asean "to better address the growing international
interest and concern on sustainable fishery development at the
global and regional level." Exploiting fishery resources,
declining production and over-fishing "must be addressed within
the Asean national context, "Mah said, The 10-member
group" must take steps to address these issues...through
sustainable fishing; management of the impact of aquaculture and
fisheries on the environment and reduction of post-harvest
losses," he said, The development center was established in
1967 with the help of Japan, the work's leading fishing nation. Mah
said closer cooperation between the center and Asean will enable the
two organizations to pool resources and avoid duplication. A joint
conference has been set for Bangkok in November to "formulate
regional policies and strategies to better manage fisheries in
Asean, "Mah said,
